Feeling a little hot this summer? Sounds like it’s time for a Bubble Tea! Bubbles is a 6.5-year-old golden x poodle puppy mill breeding stock discard. She spent her entire life in a barn, giving birth on concrete. She came to us with a very matted coat, a skin infection, an ear infection, and a mouth full of rotten teeth, most of which will need to be pulled. Bubbles has been settling into her foster home incredibly well and is really enjoying life outside of the mill, so it’s time for her to start the next chapter of her life!
Anyone who has fostered or adopted a mill discard pup understands that the decompression period is essential to helping them transition into home-life. Despite the hardships of her past, Bubbles has shown a consistent desire to enjoy her newfound freedom and accept affection! She’s been a little weary when meeting human strangers, which is understandable considering how she was treated by humans prior to her rescue. If a new human approaches, Bubbles will sniff and occasionally accept a head pat. She was shy when meeting children who approached too quickly, but did allow some older, more dog-saavy kids (age 11) to pet her head and even gave a little tail wag. Bubbles would make a great family pet, though it’s important that any children be older (8+) and have some experience or understanding of how to properly interact with a dog. Bubbles is not a super playful girl (she’s not one to play with her toys), but she certainly loves head pats and ear massages – her foster has sat with Bubbles for hours, petting her head, which Bubbles says is pure heaven!
Bubbles has had several very positive interactions with dogs while out on her daily walks! She’s always calm and friendly when a new pup strolls by and loves to meet any dog who reciprocates that interest (puppies and golden retrievers are her faves!). She has become submissive in the presence of larger, more energetic dogs. Bubbles currently goes on two walks per day (morning and evening), averaging about two hours in total. Due to a sore on her neck, she initially wore a harness, but is now wearing a martingale collar which has been a helpful tool in guiding her on the leash. She’s new to leash walking, so her furever family will need to continue working on her leash skills. Bubbles has shown a prey drive for squirrels and birds (probably wondering what the heck those new creatures are!). She’s already adapted to the city sounds and recovers quickly if made nervous by any sudden noises.
Given her past, Bubbles needs some special considerations as she transitions into her furever home. For starters, her adoptive family will need to commit to a consistent and regular grooming schedule. She has dark patches of skin and fur that her groomer said are likely scars from past sores or injuries, so preventing mats in her fur will be key. She also has long nail quicks (again, a result of living in a barn without regular exercise or grooming). Bubbles has several rotten teeth, which means she’s not necessarily food motivated and sometimes does not eat her full day’s worth of food. She is in need of a patient and caring family who is committed to helping her transition into the life she’s always deserved!
Bubbles is potty-trained and loves her crate! She’s shown minor separation anxiety when left alone outside the crate, so it’s recommended that she continue to be crated when hanging solo. Her spay and teeth removal surgeries are scheduled for July 19th.
Bubbles is a very special lady on the cusp of her senior years. Finding her furever family has been a longtime coming and she truly can’t wait to enjoy her retirement!
