CRACKERS Another day, another northern pup … time to meet Crackers, sister to Cheese! Crackers was born around April 12 as part of a litter of 11, all of whom were orphaned and found in a dumpster after their mom was killed (likely hit by a car). Crackers is livin’ the life with her fosters and their pets (she’s got a real soft spot for the resident kitty!) and is ready to meet her new family!
Crackers would be a great fit for a variety of families, though she has been very clear that a home with air conditioning is a complete non-negotiable! As a Husky X, this girl despises the heat. With the recent heat wave, she hasn’t been too keen on spending time outdoors, unless it involves playtime in the backyard. To make sure she’s receiving enough stimulation, her fosters have honed in on her basic command training. Crackers is too smart for her own good (and highly food-motivated) so she will need more than basic obedience training to keep her from getting bored. She’s a classic Husky in that she’s hella smart, has energy to spare, and could teach a master class in stubbornness! Thankfully, she’s being fostered with two dogs and a few cats, all of whom have taught her a lesson or two about manners and boundaries.
Crackers is not shy about letting her fosters know that her favourite roomie is the kitten! Anytime he’s around, Crackers’ engages in play. She hasn’t grasped the concept of gentle play yet; she loves to pounce on him, but has never been aggressive (the older cats are more comfortable giving Crackers a warning swat when she comes too close). Since she’s still teething, her fosters make sure a chew toy is nearby. With other dogs, Crackers is always ready to play! She lunges in excitement when meeting new pups and tends to get a little too in their faces. Her fosters encourage her to go the butt sniff route (much more polite!) but she just gets too excited! With new humans, she isn’t so confident and is cautious until she’s won over with a treat. Once she knows it’s a safe space, Crackers is pure sweetness!
Crackers’ adoptive family should be prepared to tackle all things puppy, but since she’s a super smart girl, training should be a breeze! Crackers definitely has FOMO; if you leave her alone in a room, she’ll scream-cry (loud is in her Husky genes!). She will sometimes cry in her crate but she’s been learning how to settle. She’s crated multiple times a day for naps and goes in freely. Continuing with crate training will be essential to Crackers’ success: if not provided with this structure, she will definitely develop separation anxiety. Plus, she’s a chewer, so the combination would not be pretty!
Crackers is working on potty training: she knows to do her business outside but is still learning how to communicate when it’s time to go. She is microchipped and has received her first round of puppy series shots. Her adoption fee will include her spay at six months and her remaining puppy shots. She is currently being treated for Cystoisospora and Giardia – all associated costs will be covered by MUTTS.
All in all, sweet Crackers has been an easy little pup for her fosters to care for. She’s growing bigger by the day and hopes to meet her new family soon (air conditioning hopefully included!)!
