  • Continuing with our Northern Mutt Series, we have Logan! Logan is a seven or eight month old baby from Nunavut who made his way to us via Manitoba. Possibly part polar bear, this guy was named after Logan from Gilmore Girls in a vote by our loyal MUTTS community. Logan is learning all sorts of new things and working really hard to be the bestest boy that he can be! He’s ready for a family who is committed to helping this big fluff thrive!

TBH, Logan is a little like each of the Gilmore guys – eager to have a good time, like Logan; a little rebellious, like Jess; initially insecure when around other dogs, like Dean; and stubborn but willing to go to great lengths for those he loves, like Luke. For Logan, having fun is a top priority and sometimes learning gets in the way. His fosters are working on the basics and though he’s not consistent, he’s getting there! He loves to engage in playing with toys and with people and will almost always instigate playtime with the resident dog Bruno (a MUTTS alumni!). Logan isn’t great with boundaries, so Bruno often has to put his paw down when the play has become too much. Logan has major respect for his temp brother, though, and tries real hard to follow Bruno’s lead with his behaviours. He would likely benefit from having another dog in the house!

Like Jess, Logan has a rebellious side. He really despises his crate; in his mind, there is no worse place to be. His fosters have been crating him during meals to create a positive association but he wants out immediately after finishing his food. Logan chews up anything inside the crate, gnaws at the metal, and barks for long periods of time until he eventually tires himself out. He really dislikes being left on his own and directs his anxiety at anything nearby that he can chew (that said, he settles down more quickly without the other dog in the room). Logan is still young and likely new to this kind of training, so with time and consistency (and maybe some puppy classes!) Logan will mature!

In true Dean fashion, Logan feels the need to come on strong when meeting other dogs. Unlike Dean, however, it’s not aggressive – he will bark and lunge at an approaching dog, but he does not snarl. Once the dogs meet, Logan settles down after sniffing and satisfying his curiosity. He can be overwhelming to other dogs and wants to play even if the other dog isn’t interested. It’s a matter of learning boundaries for Logan and sharpening his leash skills. His foster has been using a clicker and treats to keep Logan focused on their walks. He’s doing great with regular eye contact and walking beside his foster. The next step will be learning heel and his progress hints that he’s ready to take on the challenge!

And finally, like Luke, meeting new people can go one of two ways, depending on which side of the crate he woke up on: Logan may be very friendly to strangers, looking for attention and happy to receive pets, or he may bark excessively, despite minimal interactions and a cautious approach. This is another behaviour that can be quelled with consistent training. With those that he knows, Logan is very, very loyal and eager to earn best friend status. His puppy energy translates into a need to be involved in whatever his fosters are up to. He’s been known to throw a tantrum when his fosters ask for a bit of space (barking, etc.). His adopters will definitely need to focus on helping Logan build his confidence and his understanding of boundaries!

Logan is microchipped, up to date with his vaccines and neutered. He has had over a handful of potty accidents in the house (usually when he’s left alone or in his crate), and some also may be a result of the meds from his recent neuter. Otherwise, Logan’s medical records are clear!

Our resident Gilmore Guy is looking for a family who is ready to commit to helping Logan learn the ways of the world! He’s already shown a ton of potential, and with consistent training, Logan is sure to become the leading man of Stars Hollow!
